How the Magis - Chair One is made
The Magis Chair one is a futuristic, forward looking piece of furniture, so it stands to reason that the manufacturing process for a piece of furniture such as this would look like something out of 2001: A Space odyssey or Alien. In fact, is that Ripley's power loader in the images?
Take a look below and watch the video on how this clean cut chair is created.
Die Cast
The Magis chair one is created by the method of Die casting. Die casting is a process in which molten Aluminium (this case) is forced into a steel mould under high pressure. The steel moulds which are known as dies, are fabricated to produce castings with intricate shapes in a manner that ensures both accuracy and repeat-ability.
The process consists of 5 basic steps:
- Clamping
- Injection
- Cooling
- Ejection
- Trimming
Designed by Konstantin Grcic. The chair one and stool one utilise the die-casting method of manufacture to great effect, resulting in what many feel is an icon of furniture design.
