Soft Furnishings - Window Blinds explained
There are a lot of options available in the blinds category. Blinds come in a variety of types, materials and sizes.
In this blog post we try to make sense of the many different terms, phrases, jargon and variations to give you a good foundation of knowledge to make an informed choice when picking blinds for your home. First things first here is a list of the various blind types available to you:
- Roman Blinds
- Roller Blinds
- Vertical Blinds
- Venetian Blinds
- Wooden Blinds
- Fauxwood Blinds
- Pleated Blinds
- Skylight Blinds
- Perfect Fit Blinds
Roman blinds are a very traditional covering which can be crafted by our soft furnishing department from a wide range of beautiful fabrics (Visit our Showroom to see our extensive Fabric Library). As a Roman blind is raised it folds into its self, leaving a folded portion at the top of the window when raised completely. Although they look great, they do conceal a small portion of the window so may not be the best option for a dark room where light is a necessity.
Roman blinds can be fitted with linings such as blackout (which stops any light passing through) or thermal linings to cosy up a room and provide a barrier from cold or drafty windows.
Roller blinds are a popular option for window dressings. The fabric is rolled neatly at the top of the window into a tube with a sidewinder and chain which lifts and lowers the blind. Roller blinds can feature valances, cornices or fascias which hide the working mechanism of the blind and produce a more polished and finished look.
Available in a wide range of natural and synthetic fabric options, roller blinds are available in blackout and FR (fire retardant) and easy clean options.
Vertical Blinds are characterised by lengths of fabric which hang from the top of the window and can be tilted in order to allow more or less light in with the use of a wand. Vertical blinds come in a wide range of finishes including easy clean and fire retardant options, ideal for use in Kitchens and Bathrooms.
Venetian blinds are made from metal horizontal slats which can be tilted to control the light entering the window or typically for privacy. A simple tilt rod is used to adjust the slats angle, and a cord to lift and lower the entire blind.
These are available in PerfectFit for use in uPVC Windows.
Wooden Venetian Blinds
Wooden blinds has increased in popularity in recent times, They are simply made from horizontal wooden slats which tilt to control daylight and privacy. This option is suited to Lounges, Dining rooms and Bedrooms in particular. Wooden blinds can offer a huge scope for customisation much like other fabric options. We have a huge selection of wood finishes and colours as well as trim such as herringbone tape which can be used to contrast or complement the wooden louvres.
Fauxwood Venetian Blinds
Fauxwood blinds are a practical choice that are easy to maintain and clean, whilst providing the style of real wood. Great for providing privacy and controlling light levels. This relatively inexpensive option also comes in a wide range of colours and finishes. Customisation is available with a choice of slat widths, and different cords and tape.
These concertinaed blinds are created from honeycomb (or cell blinds) or more simply folded fabrics, which resembles the look of an accordion. A great option for most rooms. A simple cord pull raises and lowers the blind. The pleated blind option has a good thermal efficiency and provides shade or light filtering depending on the requirement. We stock Duette blinds which has a large selection of pleated blind options.
PerfectFit blinds are a relatively new innovation in blind design, with the blinds fitting in a discreet frame that sits between the glazing and the beading of the uPVC window. Suitable for all rooms. This option provides a clean and contemporary aesthetic which doesn't require any drilling or damage to the frame or the surrounding areas. The PerfectFit blind system also has a huge choice of colours and finishes.
Skylight or Velux Blinds
Skylight blinds are created to fit the skylights in your home, the fabric fits in side channels which stops the blind from dropping and allows the control of light from a Velux window.
